WAU senior Heather Alas, a dual major in Business Administration Finance Emphasis and Business Administration Marketing Emphasis, is the new student president of Enactus (2016-2017). This past month she talked to the Visitor about Enactus, and what being a member means to her.

Visitor: How long have you been a member of Enactus?

Alas: I've been a part of Enactus WAU since my freshman year, 2013. This year I am the student president of our team. I am looking forward to enhancing my leadership skills with the team, and building new bridges with the community.

Washington Adventist University (WAU) students are helping a Takoma Park, Md., laundry owner accomplish both steps through the school’s award-winning Enactus team.

Washington Adventist University recently held their fourth annual Visionaries Gala at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. This year’s honorees will include three individuals who provide exemplary leadership and inspiration to others. They are:

The inaugural WGTS 91.9 Summer Concert drew a large crowed in the Washington D.C. suburb of Tysons Corner.  More than 4,000 people showed up for the outdoor show with Colton Dixon, a former American Idol contestant.  The show was held on a brand new plaza suspended 43 feet in the air between the Tysons Corner Mall and three large buildings across the street.

“It was an amazing venue for a concert.  While thousands showed up with tickets, many others came just to find out what was happening and ended up staying for the whole event,” says Jerry Woods, WGTS morning show host and promotions director,.

I recall one day sitting on the steep, red oak-stained, concrete front steps of our tiny, rural home in Jamaica on long, carefree days full of wonder and expectation. My twin brother, J. Olive, and I couldn’t have been more than 3 years old because our younger sister was not yet born. On this fine day, mother gathered food for dinner from lush crops surrounding the house and firewood to cook in our homey, outdoor kitchen.

The fowls “cackled” as they lay eggs, the dogs playfully barked, somewhere a cow mooed, and the sound of water gushed over rocks in the nearby stream, invoking a mysterious flow of cool, shadowy air as the sun bore down upon our little faces—unforgettable scenes  of childhood.
